project bodied on 26's.... 77 k5 2wd
« on: July 12, 2010, 10:47:20 AM »

New to the boards, and first time Chevy owner.

I just picked up a 77 K5 2wd from Mesa.

How it sits when i got it:
lowered 2", shaved lights, roll pan, electric rear window, no motor, primered, 15" rally wheels w/ all chrome caps.

The new control arms and new drop member are on order.  They will narrow the front approx 2.5"

Plans:
26" wheels, new control arms, new x member, hydroholics 2/4 setup, paint, mildly built 350, new front end with round head lights, interior/stereo.  Probably forgetting some pieces.  Possibly turn it into a short bed/unibodied truck.

will post rendering when it is complete

I have a 454 I'm selling if you wanna do a big block instead of a small block. You gonna do a full convertible swap? Z has some windshield frames if you're lookin for one. Also why hydrohaulics? I'm a fan of airbags myself. Much better ride and you're interior doesn't get ruined if you have a leak

not sure on the motor right now I'll keep the 454 in mind.  Not gonna do the complete convertable, too many are being built with the full convertable.  As far as the hydraulics, a good friend of mine owns Hydroholics.  Plus I need to be able to untuck the wheels in order to turn.  And as far as damaging the interior.  Pumps are going to be mounted in the rear of the vehicle.  Plus it's not going to be daily driven.  It will be accumulated to help with the ride w/ no coils.

Hydrohaulics is local right? I know you can get crazy lift out of them but the ride isn't as favorable. I know accumulators help a bunch

yes they are a local company that i've known for quite some time.  They all have there rides on hydraulics.  This is my first go round with hydros so we will see.  We are running an 8" cylinder in the front, 10" in the rear.  The rear will be placed on the bars, going for optimal lift.  WITH the new control arms up front looking to get roughly 10" of lift.  That will give me substantial drop and maximum lift.  the narrower front end will give me better turning capability with the truck sitting 2" off the ground.  I'm toying with the idea of doing a mustang II rack and pinion steering setup, or boxing in the frame and keeping the stock steering box.

might as well use the mustang rack, since that's what nate used in designing the dropmember. look forward to seeing the progress on this

i have a friend the custom builds the control arms and channels the cross member.  I don't have the money currently to drop on a porter built kit.

Tonight there has been a change in plans though..

getting a frame set up for 26's.. z'd front, corvette rack and pinion, 6 lug conversion, baer bbk, drop spindles, custom upper and lower control arms, monster notch, 4 linked, bags are already installed.. BUT those WILL be removed for hydros.  it is going to speed up the process by 100x.  I want to have it at WCN

also found a full phantom grill for it

the frame i got is set up for 22's.  It will involve way to much work to get it to lay on the 26's or 28's so we are using my stock 2wd frame for measurements on the brand new frame ;)   it will be sick!
